A safety bed is designed primarily to help prevent falls and prevent entrapment or entanglement. We keep the patient safe with some of the tallest doors / sides in the industry and FDA standards for anti-entrapment.
BUT… We believe your safety bed should do more…
- Is there a psychological benefit to having a home medical safety bed that looks like furniture instead of something institutional?
- Shouldn’t safety beds that cost this much be made from only the finest materials?
- Shouldn’t safety beds like this be designed to last a very long time since the patient is probably going to need it a very long time.
- Shouldn’t families have some options for aesthetic choices in addition to functional choices on their safety bed?

Safety
- Of course the #1 factor is safety. We meet or exceed the CPSC and FDA standards of safety.
- The patients in our beds are not just little kids. Our beds are designed to withstand significantly more force to the frame and doors than a typical crib or consumer bed safety product.
- To maximize safety the features on our beds are designed to minimize the possibility of operating the bed incorrectly.
Ease of Use
This is one of our trademarks. Opening and closing a BBG safety bed is very easy, fast, quiet, and nearly foolproof. Any safety product that is hard to use will not be used correctly. If it is not used correctly, it is not longer a safety product, and in fact it may actually cause harm. Its one reason we designed the BBG trademark dual door system.
- BBG doors can be open and closed with ONE hand using only 12 pounds of force
- BBG doors have been designed to minimize the possibility that they can be used wrong. If you need a tall side the caregiver can’t partially close the door and leave the user in an unsafe situation
- Adjustable head and foot have infinite stopping points to help the caregiver find the perfect angle
Aesthetics
- We believe that medically fragile people deserve beds that look like they belong in a home. We believe that it is a psychological benefit to the patient and to the families and caregivers.
- We also believe that families should be allowed to select stains and styles to match their decor — usually without additional cost!
- We do our best to conceal screws and bolts whenever possible – unlike most competitors.
Quality
While we do take a lot of pride in what we build, the reality is the design, craftsmanship and materials are the only way quality can be defined.
- Amish craftsmen handbuild each bed to order – hand cut, hand sand, hand finish
- We use furniture grade BOARDS – no plastic edging, no veneers — to build our beds. Our corner posts are literally 4×4’s for stability and strength.
- We use centuries old cabinet making techniques with modern fasteners to keep the components from warping and coming apart.
Bottom Line
There are a few companies that make safety beds. Each one of us has a little different approach to the market and all have pro’s and cons. If you like what you see here and our bed meets your safety needs, please consider Beds by George. But whatever you decide, if your loved one needs a safety bed, do not compromise or try to just “get by” with something inadequate. …
I’ll just put a mattress on the floor?
First and foremost, this is a violation of most if not all state standards for appropriate bed options for ALL children. In those states it is grounds for removal of the child by Child Protective Services.
Floors are the dirtiest places in any home. Even with the best cleaning practices, floors have an increased presence of dander, dust, mold, etc. because that is where all that settles. Most medically fragile people have weaker respiratory and infection fighting systems that are aggravated when they spend more than 1 hour with their nose and mouth within 12 inches of the floor. Plus these mattresses and bedding products tend to get walked on… it is exceptionally difficult to maintain a clean sleeping environment.
Additionally in most cases there is an increased risk in entanglement and entrapment from loose bedding and the mattress itself. Burrowing under the mattress can lead to suffocation death. It only requires 10 pounds of force to slide a mattress on a floor far enough to create an unsafe gap between the mattress and wall, increasing the the chance of suffocation.

Why can’t I just use an inexpensive home hospital bed?
A hospital bed’s primary function is not safety. It does not have a 360 degree unbroken perimeter, the gaps in the side rails are generally too large for pediatric or special needs, the sides are too low to prevent falls from seated, kneeling or standing positions to list a few examples.
Why can’t I just buy a $30 side rail from a retail store?
Case 1: A 4-year-old boy with Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome, macrocephaly and severe developmental delay, was found dead with his head hanging over a wooden board attached to the side of his bed.
Case 2: A 4-year-old boy with lissencephaly and severe developmental delay was found dead wedged between a retractable mesh cot side and the side of his bed.
In both cases the devices resulting in death had been put in place to prevent the boys from falling out of bed.

Why can’t I just build my own?
You can. But there are some things to consider. Generally insurance will not pay for a product that is not from a medical equipment manufacturer registered with the FDA. Also keep in mind that a safety bed has years of development with specialized testing. The stresses on a safety bed frame are far greater than a normal bed. It is a challenge to build a product that is strong, safe on the interior, that opens and closes easily, and many more little details that all the manufacturers have taken years of research to develop.
What defines a Safety Bed?
Hospital Beds, Institutional Beds, Safety beds or Adaptive Beds all share a common goal of keeping the user safe from falling out or injuring themselves as a result of being in bed. The term “safety bed” is overused and a firm definition is hard to to find. We feel for a bed to be considered a safety bed it must address a few very specific issues.
1) Fall Protection: built into the structure of the bed should be some physical barrier to minimize the likelihood that the patient can fall out of bed. In many patients this protection has to apply while the patient is awake and moving around, not just while sleeping.
2) Protection from Entanglement / Entrapment: built into the design of the bed is a reduction of gaps and openings to minimize the likelihood of the patient becoming stuck in the frame or between mattress and frame. For more information on this topic, please see below.
3) Caregiver assistance to exit: similar to many safety products, the safety features should not be able to be accidentally disengaged. Many patients are unable to safely exit a bed and/or are not safe to be allowed unsupervised mobility as they are a danger to themselves or others.
4) One hand operation: doors or openings should be easy to operate. Doors should be able to be opened or closed with one hand which allows the free hand to assist patient as needed. At no point should the caregiver have to divert his/her attention away from the user to operate the unit.
Little Known Facts
- While fall protection is important in a safety bed, Entrapment is the greatest danger to the medically feeble and disabled.
- Based on studies done by the FDA if a patient is trapped or entangled in one or more of the 7 Zones as outlined in their treatise, 77% of the time the person will be injured and 59% of the time the patient will die.
- Many traditional hospital beds are totally unsafe for pediatric, adolescent and disabled youth because these patients’ smaller size and other medical conditions require specialized protection.
- Physical protection should only be part of the consideration when selecting safety products. Psychological and developmental impacts carry serious long term implications and should be part of the bed selection. Finally, do not overlook the well being of the care givers who need to work in and around these products.
- Safety Beds are a distinctly different product from traditional hospital beds.
- Drop side (doors that slide down guillotine style) beds or cribs are not approved for use in a home by the CPSC and FDA.
Beds By George Safety Beds satisfy the FDA
standards for anti-entrapment.
7 Zones of Entrapment? As outlined by the FDA
Click HERE for official FDA statement
Synopsis: Entrapment is simply the term meaning the patient has gotten some part of himself stuck or “trapped” in or on any portion of the bed. The FDA in conjunction with other research has determined these areas of entrapment are safety risks to the patient and care needs to be given to minimize or eradicate those risks.

Hospital Beds, Institutional Beds, Safety beds or Adaptive Beds all share a common goal of keeping the user safe. Some beds have additional features such as articulation, tilting, turning, etc. which has the potential to create additional risks. When those features are electrified or those features can be initiated by the user, the level of risk increases yet again.
The risks are magnified when considering patients who for whatever reason have a lesser ability to a)prevent b)extract themselves from an actual or potential entrapment situation. For example, low muscle tone patients or patients who have limited muscular control at any time while in bed have a greater likelihood of becoming stuck, injured, or even die.

FDA’s Potential Zones of Entrapment
This guidance describes seven zones in the hospital bed system where there is a potential for patient entrapment. Entrapment may occur in flat or articulated bed positions, with the rails fully raised or in intermediate positions. Descriptions of the seven entrapment zones appear below.
Zone Description
- Within the Rail
- Under the Rail, Between the Rail Supports or Next to a Single Rail Support
- Between the Rail and the Mattress
- Under the Rail, at the Ends of the Rail
- Between Split Bed Rails
- Between the End of the Rail and the Side Edge of the Head or Foot Board
- Between the Head or Foot Board and the Mattress End

Q: Will insurance pay for this? (#1 question)
A: Insurance companies and their coverage varies. Many of our clients have had success getting Medicaid, Waiver, Grants and private insurance funds. Contact your insurance provider and see our insurance section for more information.
Q: Are these beds made in the USA?
A: Yes, they are handcrafted in Indiana
Q: Are these beds only for children?
A: No, while most of our beds are used for pediatric we sell to a large and growing number of adult users up to and including geriatric. We are also seeing a great deal of interest for people with Alzheimers and dementia.
Q: Are these beds UL and CSA approved?
A: Yes
Q: Are the frames, headboard, or doors of these beds made from wood or particle board with thin veneer and plastic edging?
A: The Dream Series is solid wood – planks – like furniture was made 100 years ago. The Slumber Series is furniture grade plywood whose outer layers are solid oak. We do not use plastic edging that can come off or break. We do not use particle board. We do not use compressed sawdust, osb, mdf, poly veneer, poly laminate, pre-treated, pre-finished, polystyrene, or die impregnated wood substitutes. We cut boards by hand. We sand by hand. We stain by hand.
Q: Do these come completely assembled?
A: No, you will have some minor assembly upon arrival, but it can be done with the simplest of hand tools and very little technical knowledge needed. However these components can be a little heavy and the process will take anywhere from 90 minutes to a few hours.
Q: How much is shipping going to be?
A: Shipping costs are included to much of the Continental 48 United States and Canada but to be sure you should contact us with your specific address and bed request. Certain shipping situations may result in additional fees.
Q: Will this bed fit my child?
A: We build Twin, Extended Twin in all models and series. Double is available in the Dream Series non electric models. Twin beds fit a large percentage of the population, but obviously we don’t know the size of your child. You can see the dimensions in the specifications section.
Q: Do you have these in stock?
A: We built each bed to order and typical lead time is around 6-8 weeks. We do have a quick ship program for a limited number of beds that can be shipped in as little as 10 business days. Ask your dealer about which option is best for you.
Q: Is this product all that much better than a safety side I buy at a retailer?
A: Safety sides have their place. However a complete safety bed will generally provide greater safety and more durable years of service because the whole bed is designed as a safety system. Further, most retail sides are not designed to hold the weight of a child over 3.
Q: Is Beds by George affected by the crib side rule change?
A: The traditional drop side cribs have been banned by the CPSC as of 2011. None of our beds have that drop side feature so our beds are OK to use. All of our beds far exceed the strength requirements of a child’s crib. https://www.cpsc.gov/PageFiles/115716/cribrules.pdf
Q: Do you have a showroom somewhere so I can see one?
A: Some dealers will have a unit on display, but its not common (Unfortunately) We do, however, attend certain disability shows, conventions, etc and usually will have product on hand at those
Beds By George adaptive beds may be covered by insurance, both private and Medicaid, provided you can satisfy their requirements.
Quality Local Home Medical Supply stores are VERY helpful in getting insurance approvals. We can help you with some authorizations to private insurance and grants. If you plan to request assistance from Medicaid you MUST use one of these stores.
Standard Requirements:
While each insurance company may vary, in general two basic requirements are necessary in addition to the authorization forms required by your insurance provider:
1) Prescription from the USER’s doctor for the exact brand and model of bed and medical features it needs. (it is the same idea as prescribing medication) Example 1: patient needs Beds by George model 1700F with IV pole. Example 2: patient needs a twin size bed with 360 degree unbroken perimeter and safety sides that exceed 30 inches in height above the sleep surface and has the ability to raise the head to 60 degrees.
2) Letter of Medical Necessity and some insurance companies will prefer an LOMN from a medical professional (therapist, ATP, RTS, etc) and appropriate supporting documentation. The same examples from (1) apply.
In an increasing number of cases, insurance companies will have a standard form for “Medical Necessity” that must be filled out by the physician ordering the bed. You may want to consider writing a letter in addition to that document.
Medicaid / Waiver Requirements
There are many specific requirements based on coverage and the state you live in. Here are a few common questions.
- Will BBG submit the claim? Only local Home Medical supply companies that are registered DME’s (Durable Medical Equipment) or the care giver can submit authorization requests to Medicaid. Beds by George will work with these DME’s but we cannot submit these claims directly.
- I have both private insurance and Medicaid. Do I only have to submit my request to one of them? No, you should submit a request to both. If you have both private insurance and medicaid, you have to get an answer from private insurance before medicaid will process your request.
- If private insurance approves me, will Medicaid automatically cover the difference? Medicaid approval is not directly related to private insurance approval and vice versa. In other words we have seen where one will approve where the other will not all the time. The amount of coverage is completely dependent upon your insurance policy(s).
