Are SleepSafe Beds approved by the FDA?
SleepSafe® Beds, LLC is registered as a manufacturer, and its products, classified as medical devices, are listed with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA does not provide “approval” for this type of medical device as it is exempt under FDA’s Title 21, Chapter I, Subchapter H, Part 880, Subpart F, Section 880.5100 (b).
According the the FDA, “Registration of a device establishment, assignment of a registration number, or listing of a medical device does not in any way denote approval of the establishment or its products by FDA.”
For questions regarding FDA regulations, please contact Bob Baldacci, Director of Quality and Regulatory Affairs at SleepSafe® Beds.
Other manufacturers of safety beds may claim approval, but they have misinterpreted the statute.
Is there a way to cover the Channel Cut-Out?
Yes. We make an optional Cut-Out Cover that can be inserted into the Channel Cut-Out. The cover is fastened from the outside of the bed. We have a padded version available as well. For more specific information, please call 855-550-1684, or contact us by email: info@celesticare.com.
Is there a way to enhance safeguard against unwanted opening the bed’s safety rail?
Yes. We are occasionally asked if there is a way to prevent the safety rail from being opened by either the bed’s user, or someone outside of the bed, such as a sibling. It is best to call our Customer Service department toll-free at 866-519-9435 to discuss a solution.
How many degrees do the SleepSafe® Beds head and knee sections move when articulating?
All articulating SleepSafe Bed models, both manual and electric, are designed for the head section and the knee section to smoothly move up and down. The angle of each section can be set at a preferred angle. The HEAD section moves from the flat position (zero) to 70 degrees. The KNEE section moves from a flat position (zero) to 40 degrees. For more specific information, please call 855-550-1684, or contact us by email: info@celesticare.com.
How long does it take to ship my SleepSafe® Bed after it has been ordered?
Once ordered from your DME provider, it takes from 1 to 2 weeks to ship a SleepSafe® Bed. Expedited shipment is available. You are welcome to call us anytime to check the status of your bed after it has been ordered by your DME provider.
How do I reset my SleepSafe Bed’s Control Box?
For SleepSafe® Bed models using electric for articulation and Hi-Lo operation after January 2015, we have provided the following instructions for resetting your bed with your remote. These beds use T-Motion components to operate your bed.
SleepSafe® Beds manufactured prior to January 2015 used a different component system called Linak. For more specific information, please call 855-550-1684, or contact us by email: info@celesticare.com.
What is the difference between a SleepSafe®, SleepSafe® II and SleepSafer® Bed models?
The main difference is the height of the safety rail protection above the mattress. Each of the SleepSafe® Bed models increases its overall bed height about 10-12 inches. Even though the safety rail itself does not change in size, the overall height of safety rail protection changes with each bed model. For complete SleepSafe® Bed measurements please visit our specification page.
Another difference is the transfer height — the distance from the floor to the top edge of the bed’s wooden side panel below the safety rail.
• SleepSafe® – BASIC BED has a Transfer Height of 21¼” with the safety rail on the bed and 20¾” with the safety rail removed.
• SleepSafe® – LOW BED has a Transfer Height of 22¼” with the safety rail on the bed and 20¾” with the safety rail removed.
• SleepSafe® II – MEDIUM BED has a Transfer Height of 32″ with the safety rail on the bed and 30½” with the safety rail removed.
• SleepSafer® – TALL BED has a Transfer Height of 26″ with the safety rail on the bed and 24½” with the safety rail removed.
Can I put different casters on a SleepSafe® HiLo Bed that has towers?
The casters that are provided with the SleepSafe® HiLo bed should not be replaced with different casters as they would interfere with the HiLo operation on SleepSafe® Bed models that use towers.
Is a battery backup system available for beds that use electricity, in case of a power failure?
Yes. Battery backup systems (UPS) are available from retailers such as Staples or Office Depot.
We recommend that you purchase a UPS battery back up unit such as APC’s ES 750. This unit will give enough power to operate the bed for a limited time. This unit has 6 battery powered outlets to provide power for other devices as well.
What kind of electric outlet is necessary for SleepSafe® Beds that use electricity?
A standard, grounded (3 prong) 110 volt electric outlet is all that is needed for our electrically powered foundations. No special or additional electricity or accommodations are necessary. We recommend that you use an equipment power surge protector, like you would for your computer or other expensive electronic components, to protect your SleepSafe® Bed from a power surge.
Will a standard lift fit under a SleepSafe Bed® Bed?
Yes. Our most recent SleepSafe® Bed models have the following clearance beneath the bed’s side panel and the floor to accommodate most standard lifts.
There is a 8 inch clearance under the SleepSafe® Bed – (Low Bed) to accommodate most standard lifts.
There is a 8 inch clearance under the SleepSafe® II Bed – (Medium Bed) to accommodate most standard lifts.
There is a 7.75 inch clearance under the SleepSafer® Bed – (Tall Bed) to accommodate most standard lifts.
Various clearance heights have been in effect over the years, if your bed is over 3 years old, For more specific information, please call 855-550-1684, or contact us by email: info@celesticare.com. to check your models clearance height.
Are SleepSafe® Beds available with manual cranks?
Yes. SleepSafe® Beds has four choices with easy to operate hand cranks. The manual crank systems are located on the side of the bed, under the safety rail, making it easier and more convenient for room placement and operator use.
1) Manual Hi-Lo Combo
This will raise and lower the mattress height AND raise and/or lower
the head and knee section of the bed by using the three cranks.
2) Manual Articulation
This will raise and lower the head and/or knee section of the bed by
using two cranks located in the front panel of the bed.
3) Manual Hi-Lo
This will raise and lower the mattress height by using one crank
located in the center of the front panel of the bed.
4) Manual Electric Combo
This will raise and lower the head and/or knee section of the bed
electrically with remote. Will raise and lower mattress with a crank manually.
Can I get a SleepSafe® Bed in other lengths or widths?
All standard size SleepSafe® Beds are 77 inches long. However, we can manufacture custom lengths up to 84″, or as short as 60″, for an additional charge. Custom widths, particularly narrower than the standard twin size frame, are also available.
For more specific information, please call 855-550-1684, or contact us by email: info@celesticare.com., about custom bed lengths and widths.
How do I get replacement parts or what should I do if I have a repair problem?
Please call your local dealer that helped you purchase the bed. They should be able to help with any problem you may have. If for whatever reason your original dealer cannot help you, please contact us directly so we may assist you at 866-519-9435.
When you call, please try to have your original Sales Order number. If you cannot find that number, you can use the bed’s serial number. This number can be found on the outside of the headboard, centered at the bottom on a small clear sticker. It will be a 4 or 5 digit number.
Serial numbers can be found on any bed manufactured after 2009. Beds before that time did not have serial numbers and can be traced using the original Sales Order Confirmation that your dealer should have.
How do I find the serial number for my SleepSafe® Bed?
The serial number can be found on the outside of the headboard, centered at the bottom on a small clear sticker. It will be a 4 or 5 digit number. Serial numbers can be found on any bed manufactured after 2009. Beds before 2009 did not have serial numbers but can be traced using the original Sales Order Confirmation that your dealer should have.
Prior to 2009 only beds with electric foundations had serial numbers for the electric frame.
- The serial number can be found on an older Articulated (Plus) foundation under the head section of the metal electric frame. It starts with the letter W.
- The serial number can be found on an older Hi-Lo foundation on a metal plate stamped on the metal frame around the knee section.
As of February 14, 2018 the serial number of the bed, the frame number and the Sales Order Confirmation number will all be the same. You can locate the serial number and the frame number as before in the same locations.
Are SleepSafe® Beds for children only?
No. All SleepSafe® Beds are standard adult sized beds available in twin, full and queen sizes and will accommodate an adult up to 350 pounds.
What is the weight capacity of a SleepSafe® Bed?
The mattress supplied with your SleepSafe® Bed supports up to 350 pounds. The foundation can support more, however, weight support is usually limited to mattress specifications.
How do I clean my SleepSafe® Bed?
All surfaces of a SleepSafe® Bed can be cleaned with water and mild detergent using a soft cloth. Please avoid any abrasives and solvents.
Do you manufacture any other types of beds?
Yes. We manufacture a brand called Assured Comfort® Hi-Low Adjustable Beds. Three models are available offering various features depending on the requirements of the individual using the bed.
For more specific information, please call 855-550-1684, or contact us by email: info@celesticare.com. or please visit us at AssuredComfortBed.com.
What is the difference between an Articulated and Hi-Lo foundation?
The Articulated foundation, referred to as a PLUS model, allows the user to only raise or lower the head and knee section of the bed, electrically by a wired remote control or manually with a crank on our manual SleepSafe® Bed models. Note: Past bed models may have used a wireless remote to control articulation.
The Hi-Lo foundation on our fully electric model allows the user to raise and lower the head and knee section of the bed and control the overall height of the mattress from the floor, electrically by a wired remote control. The same features can be controlled manually with a crank with our Manual Hi-Lo Combo model.
Can I get a Hi-Lo foundation to adjust the mattress height without the head and knee adjustability?
Yes, but only with one of our manual foundation configurations. The electric Hi-Lo function is not available without the head and knee articulation.
What is the difference between a box spring and a bunkie board in a fixed foundation?
Each SleepSafe® Bed needs some type of foundation for the mattress to rest upon. With the Articulated and Hi Lo foundations, the mattress rests directly on the electric frame. With the Fixed foundation, you have a choice between a box spring or bunkie board for your mattress to lie upon. The only difference is that a bunkie board is 2 inches high and a box spring is 8 inches high.
When the goal is to maximize safety rail height above the mattress you will choose a bunkie board so that the mattress surface can be positioned 6 inches lower within the bed’s foundation. When the goal is to raise the mattress surface as far from the floor as possible, then you should choose a box spring so that the mattress will be positioned 6 inches higher. There is no price or comfort difference, only a height difference.
How should I move a SleepSafe® HiLo bed that has towers that touch the floor ?
Before moving the SleepSafe® HiLo bed, it needs to be lowered all the way so that the towers are not touching the floor. If the towers are touching the floor and the bed is moved, you could damage the towers.
Can SleepSafe® Beds accommodate an IV pole and medical tubing?
If ordered, our IV POLE kit can be installed anywhere on the foot board or headboard. It is a 30 inch aluminum pole with 4 ram hooks.
If ordered, a 2″ by 18″ vertical slot can be installed in the headboard to access MEDICAL TUBING.
Do SleepSafe® Beds offer a “flush transfer”?
All SleepSafe® Bed models without the Hi-Lo feature have multiple settings to choose when installing the bed. These settings allow different rail height protection for the beds. One of these settings allows the mattress to be just above the side panel when the safety rail is down, allowing easier transfers from the bed.
However there is one exception. Beds with a fixed foundation, using bunkie boards, cannot be setup for a “flush transfer”, as this configuration is set up for maximum safety rail protection. The bed user will need to be lifted over the side panel to transfer.
SleepSafe® Beds with Hi-Lo capability allow the height of the mattress to be adjusted, including a “flush transfer” position.
Can I add extra windows to the head and/or foot of ANY SleepSafe bed?
Extra windows can be added to all beds except the SleepSafe® – Low Bed with padding installed.
Safety Rails
Is there a way to enhance safeguard against unwanted opening the bed’s safety rail?
Yes. We are occasionally asked if there is a way to prevent the safety rail from being opened by either the bed’s user, or someone outside of the bed, such as a sibling. For more specific information, please call 855-550-1684, or contact us by email: info@celesticare.com.
My child has outgrown the height of the safety rails. Can I convert my SleepSafe Bed to a model offering more safety rail height?
Yes. Most SleepSafe® – Low Beds or SleepSafe® II – Medium Beds can be converted to a higher bed. A SleepSafer® Bed – Tall Bed can be retrofitted with a SleepSafer® Extension Kit to offer an additional 16¾ inches of safety height protection. Conversion depends on the year your bed was manufactured. Beds manufactured prior to 2009 may not be converted. If you have any questions, give a call toll-free at 866-519-9435.
To convert any bed to a higher model, while keeping the same foundation you will need to purchase a Conversion Kit from SleepSafe® Beds. This kit will include a new headboard, foot board and side panels. You will use your existing mattress, foundation, casters and safety rails.
Insurance may or may not cover the additional cost of the conversion kit. It may be necessary to submit another letter of medical necessity justifying the change. You will need to make the purchase through your local DME provider of SleepSafe® Beds.
Is there a fully enclosed SleepSafe® bed available (a.k.a. canopy bed)?
Yes.
SleepSafer® Bed Extension Offers an Enclosed Top for Additional Safety.
SleepSafe® Beds now offers a top that securely fastens to the SleepSafer® Extension. For more information, please call us toll-free at 866-519-9435.
The SleepSafer® Extension Kit maximizes the safety height an additional 16 ¾″ when fitted on top of a SleepSafer® Bed. This latest development allows a maximum of 53″ between the top of the safety rail to the top of mattress using a bunkie board as a fixed foundation.
The SleepSafer® Bed Extension Kit may be ordered initially with a SleepSafer® Bed or ordered separately as a retrofit into an existing SleepSafer® Bed.
• Available for only SleepSafer® Bed models including all foundations.
• The Extension had 6 windows, 3 on each side length, covered by see-through tear resistant mesh fabric to increase ventilation.
How much does a SleepSafe® Bed safety rail weigh?
Each SleepSafe® Bed safety rail weighs about 18 to 20 pounds depending on its finish.
How do the SleepSafe® Bed’s safety rails work? Can they be removed?
On the SleepSafe® – Low Bed and SleepSafe® II – Medium bed, the safety rails really never actually have to be removed. When they are lowered and hanging in place, they most likely won’t be in the way. Only the SleepSafer® bed – Tall Bed will need the top rail removed when full access to the mattress is needed.
When full access is needed in the SleepSafer® – Tall Bed, lower the bottom safety rail first and leave it hanging in place. Then lower the top rail, and while it is hanging in its lowered position, remove it by lifting its hardware and simply set aside.
If the SleepSafer® Bed has an extension, the top rail will raise and lock into a fastener located on the side of the extension, so the top bed rail does not need to be removed.
Note: When replacing the rail for the SleepSafer® – Tall Bed, be sure to put it back the same way you took it off. Set it back in place in its lowered position first and then flip it up to lock in place.
Do all SleepSafe® Beds include windows in the safety rails?
Yes. All beds include 2 safety rails with 3 windows (or mesh screens) in each. On the SleepSafe® — Low Bed and SleepSafe® II — Medium beds, the two safety rails are divided. One safety rail is installed on each side, allowing access to the mattress surface from each side.
In order to maximize safety rail protection with the SleepSafer® — Tall bed, the two safety rails are tiered, one on top of the other. Bed access is allowed from only one side. The back is constructed of a solid wood panel. Most SleepSafer® installations are against a wall and access from both sides is not needed.
When a SleepSafer® — Tall bed is needed and access from both sides is important, a Dual View option is available. The bed will be manufactured with 4 safety rails, two tiered on each side.
Padding
Is there a way to cover the Channel Cut-Out?
Yes. We make an optional Cut-Out Cover that can be inserted into the Channel Cut-Out. The cover is fastened from the outside of the bed. We have a padded version available as well. For more specific information, please call 855-550-1684, or contact us by email: info@celesticare.com.
What type of padding do you use inside a SleepSafe® Bed?
The padding used for SleepSafe® Beds has the following specifications and features:
Cover Material:
• 70 Denier Nylon Fabric with a Specialized Fluid Resistant Healthcare Coating
• Padding may cover windows entirely or be formed around the windows or meshed screens.
• Colors available: Cream, Gray, Taupe and Light Blue
Padding Features:
• Bacteria / Fungal resistant
• Fluid Proof
• Non-allergenic
• Easy to keep clean
• Malodor Protection
• Flame Retardant
• Stain / Tear Resistant
• Non-allergenic
• Anti-Static
If I order padding, will it cover the safety rail windows?
Yes. When padding is ordered, it is factory installed to cover all four sides of the interior, including the safety rails with the windows. If you order a bed with padding, we do not recommend using the bed if any of the pads have been removed. Removing the pads will leave a gap between the mattress and the bed side.
Please note that we manufacture two different sized foundations for a bed with padding and a bed without padding.
The first size is for a bed with padding installed. It allows just enough space for the padding to be installed and extend below the mattress surface.
The second size is for a bed without padding installed. It will be sized a bit wider so that it makes full contact with all four sides of the interior of the bed.
In either case, we are making sure the mattress fits tightly within the foundation to address the risk of entrapment or burrowing.
If I order extra windows in the headboard and footboard AND padding, will it cover those windows?
No. We can add an extra window to the headboard and/or footboard and factory install the padding around the window.
Can I order pads after I have already received my bed?
Yes. but at a higher cost than if they were purchased at the time of the bed purchase. To retrofit padding, you will need to purchase a new mattress, to allow room for the padding, in addition to the padding.
Older models may need to have the foundation replaced as well. For more specific information, please call 855-550-1684, or contact us by email: info@celesticare.com.
How does the padding attach to a SleepSafe® Bed?
Industrial strength Velcro is used to secure the padding to a SleepSafe® Bed.
The safety rail pads are extended up and over the rails and attached on the outside. The headboard and foot boards pads extend just to the top of each and attach on the inside of the bed. The pads go right to the edge of the leg in the headboard and foot board.
Mattresses
Can I buy just a mattress?
Yes, as a replacement for a SleepSafe® Bed mattress. We do not recommend using a SleepSafe® Bed mattress for other bed type. Our mattresses are designed and custom sized to fit inside a SleepSafe® Bed and may not be appropriate for other beds. Safety is our number one priority and our mattresses are designed to fits snugly within the wooden bed frame to reduce the chance of burrowing or entrapment.
If your SleepSafe® Bed was manufactured prior to 2009, and you are looking to replace your mattress, the size may be different, For more specific information, please call 855-550-1684, or contact us by email: info@celesticare.com. to confirm the size of the mattress for your bed.
Do I need special sized sheets for a SleepSafe® Bed?
No. Standard Twin, Full and Queen sized sheets readily available at any department store will fit the appropriate SleepSafe® Bed.
Is the mattress used on a SleepSafe® Bed waterproof?
No, our mattresses are not waterproof, they are water resistant. Please keep in mind, as with any nylon based material, it is not designed to withstand repeated, long standing fluid. Over time, if fluid is allowed to pool up on the mattress surface it will eventually soak through.
SleepSafe® Beds use CertiPUR-US ® compliant foam products for our mattresses featuring gel technology. This support provides optimized pressure redistribution, rapid heat dissipation, and increases in breath-ability compared to standard foam.
If the mattress surface is subject to excessive fluid, it is highly recommended that you use an additional type of waterproof or water-resistant protective cover over or around the mattress.
Insurance
Does health insurance pay for SleepSafe® Beds?
In most cases, when the bed is either prescribed by a physician or justified as Medically Necessary, health insurance may cover the bed as Durable Medical Equipment.
Your local Durable Medical Equipment (DME) provider can assist you in gathering the necessary documents to submit your health insurance claim. For more specific information, please call 855-550-1684, or contact us by email: info@celesticare.com.
Does Medicaid pay for SleepSafe® Beds?
In most cases State funded Medicaid, Medicaid Waiver Programs, Early & Periodic Screening & Diagnostic Treatment (EPSDT) Benefit and other state funded programs can cover a SleepSafe® Bed when justified as Medically Necessary.
Each State governs their own Medicaid program within Federal Guidelines so the requirements will differ from state to state. If your Medicaid claim has been denied, you may want to consider an appeal or to seek the advice of a legal advocate in your area. You can find out more information in another section of our website: Insurance.
Will my bed require prior authorization from my insurance company?
It all depends on your health insurance.
Most of the time your insurance company will require prior authorization. What this means is that your dealer will need to submit a claim, a prescription from your doctor and a Letter of Medical Necessity to justify the purchase. After submitting the claim, they must wait for the insurance company to approve the purchase, BEFORE they will move forward and order the bed from us.
On our website, under ‘Letters of Medical Necessity’ you will find useful information including several example letters of medical necessity, guidelines to write your own and a link to help you with the appeals process when needed.

For SleepSafe® Beds manufactured from January 30, 2015 to the present: RESET INSTRUCTIONS
Can I buy a bed directly from SleepSafe® Beds?
We typically do not sell our beds directly to customers. Most SleepSafe® Beds are sold through a network of more than 3000 Durable Medical Equipment (DME) providers nationwide. These courteous, knowledgeable and trusted providers are set up to assist you with submitting an insurance claim, will make your bed purchase, accept delivery and deliver and install your bed at your home. They are an integral part of the process in acquiring a SleepSafe® Bed. We as the manufacturer are not set up to assist with insurance claims, nor can we bill on your behalf.
If we were able to sell a bed to an individual, we would require payment in full, in advance, before a bed shipped. You would incur an additional $275.00 for drop shipping a bed to a residence. The individual would have to accept responsibility for accepting delivery and installation. And most importantly, there would be no local representation for after sale service if needed. We strongly recommend, even someone who wants to pay cash, to go through a local DME provider.
If you need assistance finding a DME to help you through the process of purchasing a SleepSafe® Bed, please call 855-550-1684, or contact us by email: info@celesticare.com.

Is there any maintenance that I should do to my bed?
As with any mechanical piece of equipment that has motors, electronic parts or moving parts, preventive maintenance should be performed regularly. At least once or twice a year, examine the bed and check all screws and fasteners for tightness. Over time through movement and use, a bolt may become loose. If you find a screw or bolt that is a bit loose, you can use a Allen wrench to tighten.
Be sure to ask your dealer at the time of installation to leave the Allen wrenches provide for bed assembly. You can use them at a later date should anything need tightening.
You can clean your bed with water and mild detergent using a soft cloth. Avoid abrasives and solvents.
I am moving. How do I move my SleepSafe® Bed?
It’s best to call your local dealer that helped you purchase the bed. They may be able to help you move your bed. Not all dealers offer this service and may charge a fee.
The most important thing is to be extremely careful to keep all nuts, bolts and small pieces together. The bed is actually quite easy to take apart and put back together if you take your time and stay organized.
My child’s medical needs have changed. Can I change the foundation?
Yes. Most SleepSafe® Bed foundations can be converted to another choice, depending on the year they were manufactured. Older beds, prior to 2009, may not be able to be converted. We will be happy to assist you. For more specific information, please call 855-550-1684, or contact us by email: info@celesticare.com.
To convert any SleepSafe Bed foundation, you will need to purchase a Conversion Kit from SleepSafe® Beds. This kit will include a new foundation and side panels. You will use your existing mattress, casters, safety rails, head and foot boards. Insurance may or may not cover the additional cost of the conversion kit. It may be necessary to submit another letter of medical necessity justifying the change. You will need to make the purchase through your local DME provider of SleepSafe Beds.
How can I find a Durable Medical Equipment (DME/HME) provider in my area?
Please call toll free 866-519-9435 and ask for the name and number of a local dealer in your area. We will assist you in finding the best DME provider to work with you.
How do I submit a request for a donation for a fundraising event or non-profit organization?

Is the remote control for SleepSafe® Bed operation wired or wireless?
Current SleepSafe® Bed Hi-Lo and Articulated foundations use wired remote control. Older models used a wireless remote control.
Important Note: Because older Articulated foundations have a wireless remote control that is operated through radio frequencies, you cannot have more than TWO articulated beds within a 500 foot area. We can program the remotes so they will not interfere with each other, but we can only program 2 beds. If more than two beds are needed in one location, you MUST be sure that they are far enough away from each other, otherwise, when you operate one remote control, it may adjust the other bed in a different room.
What type of wood do you use when building a SleepSafe® Bed?
SleepSafe® Beds use premium veneer core hardwood plywood produced domestically on PureBond® formaldehyde-free veneer core platforms and carefully monitored for a controlled thickness range.
SleepSafe® Bed’s all wood hardwood plywood panels offer clear advantages over solid wood panel applications. These panels offer great stability and durability, reducing the chance of splitting or warping which are inherent with solid wood applications.
The 4 bed posts on a SleepSafe® Bed are composed of solid wood and are designed to match the your finish choice. For example, we use solid oak posts to complement an oak finish.
PLEASE NOTE: When solid color or multi-color beds are ordered, the bed posts will be solid maple and will not match the colors of the bed panels

SleepSafe® Beds, LLC manufactures each bed as it is ordered. We ensure that the bed we ship correctly matches the Customer’s sales order. Each bed is carefully packed to reduce the chance of any damage during shipping. We may accept returns if the Customer has mistakenly ordered the wrong bed. It is highly recommended that the bed is returned to us in its original, palleted condition. Returns will be handled on a case by case basis and may incur additional shipping cost and restocking fee.
Prior to ordering a bed, we encourage the bed recipient to carefully review the sales order with their DME provider to insure accuracy. If you have any questions, please call us toll free at (866) 852-2337.
Also, if you mistakenly ordered the wrong bed MODEL, there may be a “conversion kit” available. Please call us at (866) 852-2337 to discuss your options.

Important Note

• The property of the shipping location must be in suitable condition to allow delivery.
• The property must be free from any relevant health and safety hazards. Any flooring, carpeting, electrical, plumbing or additional work in the areas where items are to be delivered must be completed.
• There must be adequate space within the property to deliver and install the bed.
• Customers are responsible for checking the dimensions of items ordered to ensure there is adequate space for access in elevators, staircases, hallways, and doorways.
• Assure there is enough space where the bed is to be assembled.
• All staircases and lifts to be used for access to the property must be accessible and available throughout the scheduled delivery time.
• If the delivery personnel believe the delivery of an item may cause damage to the item or property or infringe Health & Safety regulations, they will inform the Customer. Obtaining Insurance Coverage for a SleepSafe® Bed
As Durable Medical Equipment, most SleepSafe® Beds are covered by Medicaid and private insurance
We do not sell directly to insurance companies. For Insurance coverage, customers work with their Durable Medical Equipment (DME) provider, who are qualified to recommend the proper SleepSafe® Bed for a specific medical need.
This information is from experience working daily with our customer’s DME providers and caregivers. Keep in mind that these are general guidelines and that each state sets and regulates its own guidelines.
Two basic requirements are typically necessary:
1. A Letter of Medical Necessity.
2. A prescription from a doctor specifying the exact bed model and features outlined in the letter.
About Letters of Medical Necessity:
In a Letter of Medical Necessity, it must be clear that a SleepSafe® Bed addresses SPECIAL NEEDS and is the ONLY bed to address the SPECIFIC MEDICAL NEEDS of the person (patient) who will be using the bed. You must point out why their needs are not being met by their current bed. Once these failings or dangers are detailed, a SleepSafe® Bed can then be prescribed as a solution to their medical needs.
Below is a 5-step outline to help with the construction of a solid letter.
A Basic Outline for a Letter of Medical Necessity
1. Introduce the patient and how long they have been in the care of the doctor or facility. Describe their condition and detail the special needs that are a consequence of the condition, these are commonly physical and/or cognitive disabilities:
For Example:
• Lack of body or mental control;
• Frequent seizures;
• No recognition of the danger from rolling or falling out of bed;
• Entanglement with the side rails if a "hospital" bed is currently in use and the potential or
documented injury as a result;
• Potential for entrapment with the possibility of suffocation due to the gaps around the
mattress—especially the corners.
2. Explain how the current bed or crib fails to protect the patient from falls that can result in an injury. Include, if applicable, how the patient has the capacity to climb up dressers or chairs around their environment, furthering the chance of injury.
3. Address the necessity for the patient to be seen for medical observation and the patient to see their caretaker within an environment that is medically safe and secure. It is recommended that you mention the psychological benefits as well.
4. Recommend the SleepSafe® Bed model that addresses each of these concerns—with specific requirements such as full safety rails, or specific safety rail height required for medical necessity and safety.
For Example:
• For extremely active patient disorders, the double safety rail and mattress height adjustability of the SleepSafer® Bed model could best accommodate that need;
• The necessity to raise the head or knees of the patient (articulation) to feed, medicate, or provide patient mobility with the bed for therapy.
5. Remember that this process is about defining how a SleepSafe® Bed fits the specific medical need of the patient. Be careful to avoid any benefit to the caretaker, as it could cause your request for insurance coverage to be denied.
6. Be sure that the letter AND the prescription prescribe the EXACT same SleepSafe Bed model. If the Letter of Medical Necessity is requesting a SleepSafe II (Medium Bed) with a Hi-Low foundation, the doctor should request the same model.
Our website has a link to Lmnbuilder.com, a useful tool for creating Letters of Medical Necessity.
If Medicaid has denied your claim
If your request for a SleepSafe® Bed has been denied, you may have the right to appeal, but you must act quickly and follow every rule associated with the denial. Read the letter or correspondence very carefully to make sure you don’t miss a deadline. There is usually a short time line to complete all steps in requesting an appeal, often only 15 to 30 days.
Find help in your state
Every state has Legal Services to help those who may need help but cannot afford legal representation. Follow this link https://www.ncsc.org/topics/legal-services/legal-aid-pro-bono/state-links.aspx for Legal Services contacts in your state. There is no guarantee that they will accept your case, however if they do, there should be no charge to you.
Help them to help you!
To increase the chance of an agency accepting your case, be prepared BEFORE you call them. Your DME Provider may help you when contacting an advocate. If you seek the help of your DME Provider, you will need to sign a HIPPA release, so they can talk to others on your behalf. Do your best to provide the advocate a complete packet of information that should include the following information:
1. Patient (Client) Information. This is the person who has been denied.
2. Manufacturer representative information (SleepSafe® Beds)
3. The notice of determination (Letter or other communication stating claim has been denied)
4. Letters of Medical Necessity (Any letters that were submitted with the claim)
5. Cost analysis information (LCEEA) (Provide information that you have considered and exhausted ALL alternatives and why a SleepSafe® Bed is the least costly alternative to fit your specific need)
6. Product information Be sure to provide the exact bed you need. There are different safety rail heights for the SleepSafe® (Low Bed), SleepSafe® II (Medium Bed) and the SleepSafer® (Tall Bed). There are also differences for the bed foundations to consider:
- Fixed foundation
- Articulating Foundation
- Hi-Lo Foundation (Articulation plus Hi-Lo operation)
- Foundations can be operated manually, electrically or a combination of both.
We recommend that you provide a web link from www.sleepsafebed.com to the bed model you chose and a SleepSafe® Bed brochure. At http://sleepsafebed.com/products/photo-gallery/ you can find more information about the beds including specifications comparing bed models.
The advocate may be unfamiliar with a SleepSafe® Bed. It is VERY IMPORTANT for all of those involved to know about the bed you need.
This may include information on ‘specialty beds for those with special needs’, which is different than a traditional hospital bed. SleepSafe® Beds fit a very specific need:
- Helps prevent becoming entrapped or entangled within the bed
- Helps prevent injury within a bed, particularly when the bed is padded
- Helps prevent rolling, falling or climbing out of bed
- Provides a safe sleeping environment.
This information may include any studies conducted on safety issues that may be associated with a traditional hospital bed, or specialty bed or why some individuals may need a specialty bed. An example is the Hospital Bed System Dimensional and Assessment Guidance to Reduce Entrapment published by the FDA. This explains the risk of entrapment in certain types of beds.
Remember: There is no guarantee that an advocate will take your case!
Your legal advocate may review the information and investigate your case to discuss your legal options. Be prepared! Providing as much information upfront can help the advocate decide to take the case. It will be helpful to them to have the information in place that will be needed in an appeal, reducing the amount of their work. This could help them say YES!
IMPORTANT MESSAGE WHEN ORDERING PADDING FOR A SLEEPSAFE® BED
Please read this section carefully!
• IMPORTANT: Please specify padding with your initial SleepSafe® Bed order.
• When ordering padding, please indicate if you want the padding to cover the windows in the safety rails, or if you want the padding to be installed around the windows in the safety rails.
• A SleepSafe® Bed ordered with pads is fitted with a mattress to accommodate the padding.
• A SleepSafe® Bed ordered without pads is fitted with a wider mattress.
• If you want to add padding to a SleepSafe® Bed that is in use, the pads will be sent along with a
new mattress and deck. Contact customer service at 866.852.2337 for details.
Other Notes:
• If you order padding for your SleepSafe® Bed, it will be installed at the factory and will cover ALL FOUR sides. Padding only one or two sides is NOT an option.
• If you order padding for your SleepSafe® Bed, it is very important to NEVER use the bed if you have removed one or more of the pads. If you remove ANY of the pads, a gap will be created between the mattress and the sides of the bed potentially creating a risk for entrapment.

Why We Manufacture SleepSafe® Beds
Since January 1990, FDA has received 102 reports of head and body entrapment incidents involving hospital bed side rails. The 68 deaths, 22 injuries, and 12 entrapments without injury occurred in hospitals, long-term care facilities, and private homes. Read this article from the New York Times.
All reported entrapment occurred in one of the following ways:
– Through the bars of an individual side rail.
– Through the space between split side rails.
– Between the side rail and mattress.
– Between the headboard or foot board, side rail, and mattress.
All deaths involved entrapment of the head, neck, or thorax, while most injuries involved fractures, cuts, and abrasions to the extremities. Although an entrapment did occur in a patient two years of age, the majority of the deaths and injuries involved elderly patients. Patients at high risk for entrapment include those with pre-existing conditions such as confusion, restlessness, lack of muscle control, or a combination of these factors.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) identified Seven Zones of Entrapment to alert caregivers to the hazards related to these areas of a healthcare bed.
Potential Zones of Entrapment
Zone 1: Within the Rail
Zone 2: Under the Rail, Between the Rail Supports or Next to a Single Rail Support
Zone 3: Between the Rail and the Mattress
Zone 4: Under the Rail, at the Ends of the Rail
Zone 5: Between Split Bed Rails
Zone 6: Between the End of the Rail and the Side Edge of the Head or Foot Board
Zone 7: Between the Head or Foot Board and the Mattress\
The design of SleepSafe® Beds addresses each potential zone of entrapment.
SleepSafe® Beds, is registered as a manufacturer with the FDA. The beds are listed with the FDA.
For questions regarding FDA regulations, please contact Bob Baldacci, Director of Quality and Regulatory Affairs at SleepSafe® Beds at bbaldacci@sleepsafebed.com.
Other manufacturers of safety beds may claim approval, but they have misinterpreted the statute.
We want your loved one to rest and sleep in a safe and comfortable environment. As we designed the SleepSafe® Bed, we listened to the advice from therapists and caregiving professionals who defined the needs of their clients with Special Needs, particularly those with physical and cognitive disabilities.
SleepSafe® Safety Beds, for insurance purposes, are considered as durable medical equipment. Feel free to call us at 866-519-9435 to discuss your choices or to proceed with the process of purchasing a SleepSafe® Bed through your Durable Medical Equipment (DME) provider.
CHOICE #1 – Which SleepSafe® bed model will suit your needs?
Our safety beds have one distinct difference — the HEIGHT OF THE SAFETY RAIL PROTECTION above the mattress. This choice should be made based on the activity level of the user. How active are they? How much safety rail above the mattress is needed? Can they sit up? Can they pull to kneel or stand in the bed? Keeping this in mind will help you and your doctor, ATP or therapist to determine which bed is most appropriate. Also, you will need to order your bed with or without padding.
HEIGHT OF SAFETY RAIL PROTECTION above the mattress for SleepSafe® Bed Models:
• The SleepSafe® – BASIC Bed safety rail height range is 16½” to 22″ depending on configuration.
• The SleepSafe® – Low Bed safety rail height range is 0″ to 17¼” depending on configuration.
• The SleepSafe® II – Medium Bed safety rail height range is 4¼” to 27″ depending on configuration.
• The SleepSafer® – Tall Bed safety rail height range is 18¾” to 36¼” depending on configuration.
• The SleepSafer® – Tall Bed with an Extension safety rail height range is 53″ to 35¾” depending on configuration.
It is important to also consider TRANSFER HEIGHT.
• The SleepSafe® – BASIC Bed transfer height is 22¼” with safety rail on. 20¼” with safety rail off.
• The SleepSafe® – Low Bed transfer height is 22¼“ with safety rail on. 20¼“ with safety rail off.
• The SleepSafe® II – Medium Bed transfer height is 32″ with safety rail on. 30½” safety rail off.
• The SleepSafer® – Tall Bed transfer height is 26″ with safety rail on. 24½” with safety rail off.
For a complete comparison of bed models, please visit our SleepSafe® Bed Specifications.
As shown, each bed offers increased safety rail height and level of protection. When you line the 3 different beds side by side you will see that each one gets taller than the next.
CHOICE #2 – What function do you need in a foundation?
Every durable medical equipment (DME) SleepSafe® Bed includes a foundation that supports the mattress. The following foundations are available for SleepSafe® Safety Beds:
• FIXED Foundation
• MANUAL Foundation
• ARTICULATING Foundation
• HI-LO Foundation
Select the function or combination of functions that will best suit your needs.
• FIXED FOUNDATION offers a foundation with a fixed height and NO articulation or HI-LO features. The mattress will lie flat on a box spring or bunkie board. Depending on the bed model chosen, you will have more than one choice for positioning that fixed height at the time of installation.
• The SleepSafe® – BASIC Bed offers 1 fixed height option. Bunkie Board only.
• The SleepSafe® – Low Bed offers 2 different fixed height options.
• The SleepSafe® II – Medium Bed offers 2 or 3 different fixed height options.
• The SleepSafer® – Tall Bed offers 2 different fixed height options.
The height/positioning choice you make when installing the fixed foundation will determine the height of safety rail protection above the mattress. Example, if you choose to install at the lower position, this will increase the height of protection above the mattress. You may change the height of your fixed foundation at any time.
NOTE: You have a choice when choosing the Fixed foundation of a box spring or bunkie board. There is NO cost or comfort difference between the two options. The only difference in the two is the depth of each. A bunkie board offers approximately 5″ more of safety rail protection.
• MANUAL FOUNDATION offers four choices. The hand cranks use a hydraulic system and are easy to use with little effort by the operating caregiver. Note: The hand crank handles fold up into the handle’s shaft.
- Manual Hi-Lo Foundation without the Articulating feature. This will raise and lower the mattress height with one crank located in the front panel of the bed below the safety rail.
- Manual Articulating Foundation without the Hi-Lo feature. This will raise and lower the head and/or knee section of the bed with a combination of two cranks located in the front panel of the bed below the safety rail.
- Electric Articulating Foundation with Manual Hi-Lo. This will allow user to raise and lower the head and/or knee section of the bed electrically with a remote. The raising and lowering of the mattress are controlled by a manual crank located in the front panel of the bed
- Manual Hi-Low Foundation with the Articulating feature. This will raise and lower the mattress height and raise and lower the head and knee section of the bed with a combination of three cranks located in the front panel of the bed below the safety rail.
With a hydraulic system, the hand cranks are easy to use with minimal effort by the caregiver.
• ARTICULATING FOUNDATION offers an electric frame with a fixed height choice. This foundation features head and knee elevation by remote control. With the touch of a button, you can elevate the head and/or knee section of the bed. As in the Fixed foundation, there are more than one height positions to choose at time of installation.
The height/positioning choice you make when installing the Articulated foundation will determine the height of safety rail protection above the mattress. Example, if you choose to install at the lower position, this will increase the height of protection above the mattress. You may change the height of your fixed foundation at any time.
• HI-LO FOUNDATION offers a Hi-Lo electric frame as your foundation with FULL articulation. Not only does the head and knee section elevate, but the Hi-Lo feature allows the mattress surface to be raised or lowered by remote control. This is considered a fully electric bed. Depending on where you position the mattress within the frame will determine the amount of safety rail protection above the mattress. When lowered all the way down you will maximize the rail height above the mattress. As you begin to raise the mattress from the floor, you will decrease that safety rail height above the mattress. With the Hi-Lo foundation, you can position the mattress anywhere within the range of motion of the frame.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The Hi-Lo electric foundation has a WIRED remote control on a cord plugged into the bed and does NOT operate more than one bed. No problem to have multiple beds in one space.
CHOICE #3 – What bed size is most appropriate?
The following durable medical equipment (DME) bed sizes are available for SleepSafe® Beds. Mattresses support up to 350 lbs.
• TWIN offers a standard twin bed size. Mattress size is 38″ by 77″.
ALL twin sized beds are available with all available foundations.
• FULL offers a standard full bed size. Mattress size is 51″ by 77″.
ALL full sized beds are available with all available foundations.
• QUEEN offers a standard queen bed size. Mattress size is 61″ by 77″.
ALL queen sized beds are available with all available foundations.
CHOICE #4 – What wood finish would compliment your room best?
The following wood choices are available for all SleepSafe® Beds. Please note that our beds are made with natural wood veneers. We do not use a stain or paint, allowing the natural beauty of the wood to shine through a protective clear finish.
• ALDER is a rustic birch with random knots and straight grain. It is moderately light with a clear, natural finish.
• MAPLE is the lightest of wood choices and shows very little wood grain.
• OAK is a bit darker than the maple, but relatively light in color and shows more natural wood grain.
• CHERRY is slightly darker than Maple and Oak but again, is still relatively light in color. Many people tend think of the dark cherry stain when thinking of cherry, but remember this is the natural wood with no stain finish, however, over time, cherry wood will darken naturally over the years.
• MAHOGANY should be the darkest of the wood choices but mahogany finishes will vary significantly. We use a Mahogany which is naturally lighter than typical dark Mahogany. The color will darken with time.
• MIXED or SOLID COLORS are now available! The colors of the bed components can be mixed and matched for the combination of your choice. In our Flyers section you will find Color Selection Forms that can guide you through the process of selecting the colors of the different parts of the bed. Colors include solid White, Blue, Green, Red, Yellow, Orange, Purple, Pink, and Black. All leg posts are available in Maple only. Leg posts are not available in colors. Contact us or talk to your local distributor for details.
CHOICE #5 – Do you need any additional accessories?
• PADDING: Very Important : When ordering your bed, you will need to order your SleepSafe® Bed with or without padding depending on your needs. Our beds are now sized and manufactured accordingly. It is important to make this determination when you order your bed as retrofitting your bed in the future will be costly. If you order padding, it will be installed at the factory and will cover ALL four sides. Padding only one or two sides is NOT an option.
If you order padding with your bed, it is very important to NEVER use the bed if you have removed one or more of the pads. If you remove ANY of the pads, a gap will be created between the mattress and the sides of the bed potentially creating a risk for entrapment. PADDING INFORMATION
• NEW! MESH SCREENED WINDOWS CAN NOW BE INSTALLED IN THE SAFETY RAILS instead of the traditional clear windows.
• IV POLE can be installed anywhere on the footboard or headboard. It is a 30 inch stainless steel pole with 2 ram hooks.
• MEDICAL TUBING can be accessed through a 2″ by 18″ vertical hole cut from the headboard.
• HEADBOARD WINDOW
• FOOTBOARD WINDOW
• EXTENDED ENCLOSURE – OPEN will add 16¾” of safety height to our SleepSafer® Bed
• EXTENDED ENCLOSURE – CLOSED will add a top securely onto the Extended Enclosure.
• DUAL VIEW SAFETY RAILS for HIGH BED offers 2 additional safety rails, replacing the solid wood panel on the standard SleepSafer high bed, allowing access from both sides of the bed.
ALL beds include the following items:
1. SleepSafe® Bed model of choice (Basic, Low, Medium or Tall)
2. Premium Mattress: Our CertiPUR-US memory foam mattress provides remarkable comfort and support. The gel polymers in the memory foam help keep the mattress cooler to keep the user’s body temperature normal. SleepSafe® Bed Padding Option
VERY IMPORTANT NOTE:
When ordering your bed, please indicate with or without padding
SleepSafe® Beds are sized and manufactured with or without padding. Please make this determination when you order your bed. Retrofitting your bed in the future will be costly. If you order padding it will be installed at the factory and will cover ALL four sides. Padding only one or two sides is NOT an option. PADDING INFORMATION
If you order padding with your bed it is very important to follow our recommendations by NEVER using the bed if you have removed one or more of the pads. If you remove ANY of the pads, a gap will be created between the mattress and the sides of the bed potentially creating a risk for entrapment.
Four colors of padding are currently available: Cream, Gray, Taupe and Light Blue.
SleepSafe® Bed IV Pole Option / Channel Cut-Out
You can order your bed with or without an IV Pole attachment. It comes with a mounting bracket and can be installed anywhere on the headboard or footboard. It is a 30 inch stainless steel pole with 2 ram hooks.

This is helpful when ordering the SleepSafer® – Tall Bed as it allows more visibility.
SleepSafe Bed® – Our Memory Foam Mattress with Gel Technology
SleepSafe® Bed mattress support surfaces provides optimized pressure redistribution, rapid heat dissipation, and increases in breathability compared to standard foam.
Memory foam infused with gel polymers is designed for patient comfort as well as clinical superiority. Benefits include:
• Reduced incidence of pressure ulcers by channeling heat away from the body significantly faster than standard foam, virtually eliminating perspiration moisture.
• Superior pressure redistribution achieved by providing more support and less cradling at higher levels of compression, distributing pressure over a much larger surface area and eliminating static fatigue.
How Does It Work?
The technology works by allowing air to pass through open cells, channeling it away from the body instead of trapping it within the closed cells of traditional memory foam. The infusion of gel polymers throughout the foam contributes both cooling properties and the virtual elimination of static fatigue. As a result of the marriage between open cell foam and gel infusion, the mattress holds its shape better, redistributes pressure over a larger surface area, and successfully wicks heat away from the body, leaving patients cool, dry, and comfortable.
Foam products that are certified meet the following criteria:
• Low Emissions (VOC’s)
• BPA Phthalate – Free
• Made without Ozone Depleters
• Mercury, Lead and Heavy Metal Free
• Made without Formaldehyde
• CFC – Free
• BHT – Free
• Methylene Chloride – Free
• PBDE – Free
• Emissions – Tested
• Content – Tested
• Performance – Tested
• Environmentally Innovative
Other notes about the foam used in SleepSafe Bed mattresses:
• Foam products use a blend of natural oil-based and conventional polyols, reducing our country’s dependence on foreign oil.
• Benefits farmers looking for a new market for the crops they grow.
• Polyol is made partially from plant-based renewable oils such as soy bean and castor beans.
